Intelligent Traffic System (Intelligent Traffic System) is an advanced application that incorporates intelligence and aims to provide innovative services related to different modes of transport and traffic management. It allows multiple users to be well informed and to become more secure and coordinated for the intelligent use of transport networks.
Although ITS can refer to all modes of transport, the European Union Directive 2010/40 / EU, drawn up on 7 July 2010, defined the ITS systems as the most applied information and communication technologies in the field of road transport , including infrastructure, vehicles and users, and traffic management and mobility management, as well as interfaces with other modes of transport. ITS can improve transport efficiency in a number of situations, ie road transport, traffic management, mobility, etc.
Many of the proposed ITS systems involve road surveillance, which is a safety priority. In addition, these systems can play a key role in the rapid mass evacuation of people in urban centers following serious accidents as a result of a natural disaster or threat.
The high population density can be supported by a multimodal system of hiking, bicycle transport, motorcycles, buses and trains. In this sense ITS systems can play the role of traffic management in smart cities or Smart Cities.
